Once again the library will ring with the sound of children’s laughter and the unmistakable sound of FUN with a capital F! It’s time for the annual Reading Is FUNdamental (RIF) book distribution at the Statesboro Regional Library and staff members, volunteers and, of course, all the children are more than a little excited about this year’s reading celebration. For two weeks, April 30 – May 11, 4,000 children from Pre-K through second grade will visit the Library, see a funny, original puppet show, and choose a book to keep for their very own. An additional 2,000 children will receive books on-site at area preschools.

Volunteers are welcomed during the two week period to read to the children, introducing them to all the wonders found inside a book! If you have only 20 minutes, that’s enough time, and your enthusiasm is the only training you will need. To sign up as a RIF Reader, call 764-1345 or come by the library during regular hours.

The RIF program at the Statesboro Regional Library has been recognized as one of the 25 most outstanding RIF programs in the world. “One of the main reasons our program is so successful,” said McDuffie, “is our talented, hard-working library staff, and of course, ourRIFvolunteers. We could not provide a program of this magnitude without the people here at the library, the parents, teachers, media specialists, and all the other community members who believe in what we are doing, and are so generous with their time and support. Another reason isUnited Way. RIFwas one of the first agencies funded here, and they’ve been here for us all along!”

In her books, she combines her love of cracker culture, and blends ecology with her personal autobiographical history. In her book Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, she recounts growing up in a junkyard at the edge of a longleaf pine forest. Her experiences led her to discover environmentalism while attending North Georgia College and in her books Ray often looks at life in rural southern Georgia in her blend of memoir and nature study. Two of her books have been named to list of 25 Books Every Georgian Should Read. She’ll introduce us to her newest book, Drifting into Darien: A Personal and Natural History of the Altamaha River. It’s the true story of what happens to Ray on a week-long trip down the river one spring, a trip she’d dreamed of taking since a girl. However, just before the voyage, a strange and disturbing piece of mail arrives. The river journey becomes a way to accept a world that contains both good and evil. The journey, like the river itself, is transformation. She will sign copies of her book after the presentation. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Statesboro Regional Public Library.

Library patrons can obtain Zoo Atlanta Passes at any of our locations just by owning a PINES library card. The pass is valid for up to two adults and two children. Simply check out a Zoo Atlanta DVD and return it to receive a Zoo Atlanta Family Pass.

Launched in 2009, the program is now available in all 159 Georgia counties through a a partnership with the Georgia Public Library Service. As one of the state’s largest living science labs, Zoo Atlanta is a resource for all of Georgia, not just Atlanta, said Raymond B. King, President and CEO of Zoo Atlanta. We’re proud to partner with the Georgia Public Library Service on increased access for everyone in our state. This wonderful collaboration between Zoo Atlanta and Georgia’s public libraries brings a new dimension to our services, said Dr. Lamar Veatch, Georgia’s State Librarian. We are very pleased to play a role in bringing this Georgia treasure to all corners of our state.

One Zoo Atlanta Family Pass is available for checkout in each participating public library. The pass may be checked out once per year, per card, per household, and is valid for two adults and up to two children. The pass is not valid for fee-based events or programs and may not be combined with other discounts or promotions. Standard general admission will apply to families with additional children; children must be accompanied by an adult.

We are very excited about seeing this program expand not just throughout the Atlanta metro area, but throughout Georgia, said Marcus E. Margerum, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Zoo Atlanta. It’s an important part of our mission to extend opportunities for all Georgians, not just those living within a
particular mile radius of the Zoo.

Visit zooatlanta.org for full details on accessing and using the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass, or call your local public library for more information.

About Zoo Atlanta
An accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Zoo Atlanta inspires value and preservation of wildlife through a unique mix of education and outdoor family fun. From well-known native wildlife to critically endangered species on the brink of extinction, the Zoo offers memorable close encounters with more than 1,000 animals from around the world. Opening in March 2011 is Complex Carnivores, a new series of exhibits featuring bush dogs, fossa and binturong. Zoo Atlanta is also proud to be one of only four zoos in the U.S. that giant pandas call home: Lun Lun’s newest cub, born November 3, 2010, makes his public debut in spring 2011. Other highlights include the nations largest collection of western lowland gorillas, the nations largest zoological collection of orangutans and a global center of excellence for the care and study of vanishing reptiles and amphibians.

The Zoo is open daily with the exceptions of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Keeper talks, interactive wildlife shows, education programs and special events run year-round.

Once again, Georgia’s public libraries are making it easier than ever for patrons to explore and learn about the state’s outdoor attractions. Building on Georgia Public Library Services relationship with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the popular State Park ParkPass program, public libraries across the state will begin loaning family passes for the Go Fish Education Center in Perry this month. A kickoff event is scheduled to take place at the center on Friday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. The family passes, when presented with a valid library card, will be good for free admission to the center for as many as six family members a potential savings of up to $30. The center is located just off I-75 Exit 134, near the state fairgrounds in Houston County.

According to Jeremy Wixson, the center’s manager, the Go Fish Education Center gives visitors a fun and interactive look at Georgia’s diverse aquatic wildlife and natural habitats. Among the facility’s most popular attractions are its freshwater aquariums featuring trout, largemouth bass and more; interactive fishing, boating and shooting simulators; a stocked pond for fishing; and underwater habitats from mountain streams to black-water swamps that feature live alligators and other wildlife. Visitors can also get our tried-and-tested tips on how, where and when to fish in Georgia Wixson said.

The Go Fish Education Center is currently open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Through the week, it is reserved for educational outreach programs that include on-site classes for students and conservation-centered public educational workshops and seminars. The facility also can be rented for special events.

We’re pleased to be joining forces once again with our friends at Georgia DNR to provide Georgia’s citizens with another fun, exciting and educational opportunity like this, said State Librarian Dr. Lamar Veatch. For those who live nearby and for those who are traveling in or through the area, the Go Fish Education Center provides a top-notch travel experience. This partnership is a great complement to our State Park ParkPass program.

Because of the Go Fish pass programs expected popularity, families interested in borrowing a pass from their local public libraries are advised to plan early, as supplies of the passes are limited.
