Magician Chad Crews performed his “Authors of Mystery and Horror Show” at the Pembroke Public Library on October 25th, 2007. The show is especially popular around Halloween, and is used by libraries as a way to bring in more teenage visitors. Chad uses many tricks that are tailored to the themes of many of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poems and stories. The exciting and spooky magic show introduces it’s viewers to many interesting and little known facts about Poe and his influence on future authors, such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Sherlock Holmes fame, as well as Harry Houdini, the famous magician and escape artist. Chad has been performing magic for many years, and travels all over Georgia and South Carolina performing educational magic shows for schools and libraries.
The Friends of the Pembroke Public Library held a booksale on September 14th, 2007. Money generated from the sale will be used to support library programs and materials.
On August 9th a stirring flag raising ceremony was held in front of the Pembroke Library. This was the culmination of an ambitious Eagle Scout Leadership project undertaken by Jonathan Strickland.
Scoutmaster Dave Williams conducted the ceremony, with many project supporters in attendance and some kind words from Mayor Judy Cook. Jonathan Strickland and his Scout Troop conducted the flag-raising faultlessly. His brother, Jeremy, participated, as their proud parents looked on.
Jonathan Strickland did an outstanding job of organizing this project and doing the necessary fund-raising to see this through. The staff of the Pembroke Library and I are grateful for his months of effort in this accomplishment. The flag installation really looks terrific, and will be lit every night, and will be under the scrutiny of security cameras. A bench is in place for quiet contemplation and a marker will soon be in place to commemorate this event.
Jonathan’s efforts were made possible thru the support of many members of the community. I hope that I’ve included all these wonderful people in the following list:
Renee L. Houser, Hagan’s Construction, James and Elaine Reeves, Paul and Rhetta Gibson, David and Dolores Williams, Shannon Patterson, Linda Fisher, First Bank of Coastal Georgia, Pembroke Telephone Company, Staff of Bryan County Gateway BHS, Owens Supply, Morrison’s Funeral Home, Tyler Granite Company, Bryan County Public Works, Derrell Newman, Russell Sowell, Brian Wilson, Woodmen of the World, Henry Westbeary, Joseph Jernigan, Jeromy Lonon, Joshua Nubern, Daniel Strickland, Jimmy and Judy Cook, Candy Graham, and Jeremy Strickland.
