Music Makers

This Fall, the Statesboro Regional Library will be welcoming local musician and teacher, Dr. Michael Braz, who will will share his musical world with interested students in Music Makers. Open to ages 10 – 14, the six weekly 45-minute workshops will introduce participants to both common and uncommon musical instruments, while teaching the basic building blocks of music in a relaxed setting. Teen summer reading program 2012

Franklin Memorial Library was one of the hot spots in Swainsboro for teens this summer.  Forty area youth, grades 6-12, read a total of 738 1/2 hours. Readers turned in folders with at least 2 hours and up to 60 hours of reading time. They also attended weekly programs and engaged in craft activities. On Tuesday, July 17, readers were rewarded with a pajama pizza party as a finale to a great summer reading experience. Jewelry Workshop

Teens designed and created jewelry during a recent workshop conducted by Statesboro Regional Library Assistant Director, Jennifer Durham. Durham instructed the youth on the different materials and techniques used in jewelry making. Each participant chose from a large selection of stones and beads, stretchy cord and tiger tail to make necklaces, bracelets, key chains and anklets. Showcasing their masterpieces are Danielle Johnson, Maurice Brantley and Danielle Foots.

Success begins at home

Brooke and Joshua Hannah sit proudly on seat cushions donated by Lonnie Johnson. Mr. Johnson donated homemade seat cushions to summer reading program participants as a reminder to parents and kids that success begins at home. Cushions contained Fourth of July memorabilia, fake money, alphabets, numbers and other educational items.

Magician: Bill Packard

The special performer this week is Bill Packard who hails from New England, where he earned a Performance and Teaching Degree in Music.  Come see him at the Statesboro Regional Public Library on Thursday, June 28th at 10:30 a.m. Bill toured with various bands, including the country-rock group “Atlanta”, which recorded three Top Ten hits and two Gold albums in the mid-80s.  Bill’s break into magic began in Underground Atlanta in 1989, where he performed for ten years. Stargazing held at Franklin Memorial Library

Franklin Memorial Library held it’s first ever stargazing event, Friday, June 14.
A crowd of approximately 50 gathered at the back parking area of the library waiting for nightfall. Tom Faller, an amateur astronomer and brother of assistant library manager Barb Moore, travelled from Atlanta to guide our sky watchers through this new experience. Tom gave a brief orientation, informing us of what to expect.  The group took turns looking at objects through the telescope. The sky was somewhat cloudy but we were able to see a clear picture of Saturn …
