The census of the United States has been taken by the federal government every ten years since 1790. These records have been microfilmed by the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Copies of decennial census forms from 1820-1930 are available on microfilm at Statesboro Regional Library. Our collection consists primarily of Georgia counties; however, we have several reels from Florida and South Carolina. For more information about our holdings, ask one of our reference librarians (912) 764-1337.

Borrowing Census Records

If you need a census for a county that we do not own, we can borrow any Georgia county census for any available year from the Georgia Public Library Services in Atlanta through Interlibrary Loan. Fill out a request with the year and county. If you need a Soundex, you also need to include the name of the person you are researching. There is no charge for this service. If you need a census from outside Georgia, our Genealogy Department can rent the microfilm from Heritage Quest. This is a commercial site which charges $3.25 per reel plus $3.00 shipping and handling. Film may also be borrowed through the National Archives' census microfilm rental program.

You may also visit the nearest Family History Center of the Mormon Church. They will borrow microfilm to be used in their facility. The Center in Statesboro is operated by Janet Johnson (681-3261) and is open Wednesday 5-9, and Thursday 12-9 or by appointment
