Amelia Bedelia: This is Your Life!

Where: Statesboro Regional Library
When: Wednesday, November 17th at 10:30

What’s more fun than a celebration that brings children and books together? The answer is absolutely nothing! That’s what the American Booksellers Association thought in 1919 when they established the first Children’s Book Week and eight-eight years later the Statesboro Library still agrees.

This year Children’s Book Week is celebrated from Nov. 12-18. The theme for the week is “Rise up, Reading” and the Library has planned events to engage the whole family.

The highlight of the week will be a visit from everybody’s favorite mixed up maid, Amelia Bedelia. Amelia Bedelia will make a special appearance at the Statesboro Library Sat. Nov. 17 at 10:30. Children who have loved the books by Peggy Parrish will not want to miss seeing their favorite storybook character come to life.

Portraying Amelia Bedelia is a special labor of love for Statesboro native Amy Smith Beaucham. Amy is the daughter of Libba Smith and has been portraying the literal-minded character for several years. Her job with the Griffin County School System allows her to travel with her one woman show “Amelia Bedelia, This is Your Life.”

The popular series of books deal with Amelia, who is the maid for a wealthy family. She regularly botches her assignments by taking her instructions literally. For example, when she is told to “dust the furniture”, she throws talcum powder (after all, the box says “dusting” powder”). When told to “dress the turkey” she can’t decide on the proper outfit!

During the program children will see Amelia act out several scenes from the book series. ”One of my favorites comes from Amelia Bedelia and the Surprise Shower.” says Youth Services Librarian Elaine McDuffie. “Amelia Bedelia is told to “run over the tablecloth with an iron” and she puts on her tennis shoes to do just that.”

All of the Children’s Book Week events are free and open to the public. Plan to arrive early, as space is limited. For more information on these events, please call the Youth Services Department at 764-1344 or 764-1345.
