Reading to Rover

Where: Statesboro Regional Library
When: 4th Monday of the month at 5:00pm

The Statesboro Regional Library is going to the dogs, literally! A program called “Reading to Rover” will be held at the library in the Children's Activity Room. Four certified therapy dogs will be available for a very special activity for children ages 2-10. Each child will spend about 20 minutes reading a book to each canine companion. The amount of time spent with each dog will depend upon the number of people attending the program. Parents must accompany their child to the library.

Many libraries throughout the United States utilize therapy dogs with children to increase their reading level, to build self-esteem, and because it is fun! “New readers may be nervous reading in front of a class or to adults, but dogs are completely nonjudgmental. The library will provide special books that both the child and the dog will enjoy, or children may bring a favorite book from home. A typical afternoon of “Reading to Rover” will include the child, the dog, and the dog’s handler, who is present for the entire session. The child will be introduced to the animal, with a few minutes for paw shakes and head rubs. Then, it’s down to business. It’s the child’s job to read aloud and the dog’s job to listen attentively. What could be more fun than a good book and a beloved pet to help you enjoy the story?

The Reading to Rover program will be held on the 4th Monday of each month from 6:00-7:00pm at the Statesboro Regional Library. If you would like more information please call us at 764-1344.
