In celebration of International Literacy Week (Sept. 4 – 10) and Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 14), an international story-time was presented on Wed, Sept. 7 for children and parents in the Statesboro Regional Library community room. Planned and presented by the students enrolled in the Library’s ESL (English as a Second Language) class, and led by OTC instructor Amy Perry, this even turned out to be a delightful mix of music, dance, costumes, poetry, and storytelling, and created a festive atmosphere as students displayed examples of cultural art from different countries around the world. The audience participated in a variety of activities, and children and parents were even invited to try on traditional clothing from Korea.

The Friends of the Statesboro-Bulloch Library welcome Will McIntosh, whose short story Bridesicle won the Hugo Award for science fiction in 2010, as he shares about his first novel, Soft Apocalypse. Set in Southeast Georgia, the book has been praised by Publishers Weekly: “In this moving debut from Hugo-winner McIntosh, the prosperous world of 2023 ends not with a bang but with a crackle, the sound of genetically engineered bamboo growing overnight and destroying roads and buildings. Though it may be soft, this apocalypse has plenty of sharp edges.” We may also get a preview of Deadland, set to be published in 2012.

Please join us for this free event in the Sorrier Room at the Statesboro Regional Library on Thursday, September 15th at 7:00pm.
