A patron’s card will be blocked, and no services may be obtained with it if the patron has 10 or more overdue items, or owes $10 or more in unpaid fines and/or fees. Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy from the libraries. Failure to receive notices does not exempt patrons from the responsibility for library materials or overdue fines. Notices are generated and mailed centrally. First and second overdue notices are sent via email to those patrons with email addresses in their user records. The final overdue notice is always sent via US Mail.
The first overdue notice is generated at 7 days past the due date of an item.
The second overdue notice is sent at 14 days past the due date.
The final notice, which assesses the replacement cost of overdue materials, is sent at 30 past the due date.
At this point, patrons who have still not settled their accounts with the library will be referred to Unique Management Services (UMS). UMS is an agency which specializes in material recovery services and works exclusively with libraries. Only patrons who have not contacted the library and attempted to settle their account will be referred to UMS.
Once referred to UMS a $10 fee will be added to the patron’s account to cover the cost of the service. UMS will then mail two letters and attempt to contact the patron by phone. If the patron does not settle their account a final notice will be sent. Thirty days after the final notice is sent, if the account is still unresolved, UMS sends a negative report on the patron to the credit reporting agencies.
If the patron is a minor the person listed as the parent/guardian on the minor patron’s records will be the person responsible for the account and the person who will be reported to the credit agencies if necessary.
Regardless of any other arrangements made, the library will still collect the $10 UMS fee once the patron has been turned over to UMS.

Book and video drops are placed outside to return materials at times when the library is closed. Materials may be placed in the book and video drops or returned to the Check-Out desk. Books from other libraries within the pines system may be returned to any library. Please put books in the book only drop and DVD and Audio in the AV drop.
