Our Microfilm collection includes the Bulloch County Newspapers from 1900 to 2013. We also have Bulloch County Court and Land Records on microfilm. These include marriage licenses, deeds, marks and brands, Inferior and Superior Court Minutes, Ordinary Court Minutes, wills and estate records.
Census records are available in a variety of formats. Censuses for Bulloch County, through 1930, are transcribed and indexed in book form. We have print abstracts of many other Georgia counties as well. Of course, all Georgia Federal Censuses from 1820-1940 (and soon the 1950 census) are available on Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest, and FamilySearch.
The Family File is a large surname file of information gathered from individuals and professional genealogists. It includes pedigree charts, DAR applications, copies of original documents, and many other sources of information for a particular family. You are welcome to look through the different files and make copies for your own use.
Special Local Resources
Bulloch County Genealogical Source Material by Alvaretta K. Register is an index and abstract of Bulloch County Court Records in the 1800s. It makes it easy to find deeds, wills, marriages, and much more.
Bulloch County, Georgia Cemeteries Index by Henrietta Royal is an index to all cemetery surveys which were produced in Bulloch County up to about 1980. If you do not know where an ancestor is buried, you can simply look up the name, and possibly find the cemetery name and volume which contains the survey.
Bulloch County obituaries from the mid-1970’s to the present are available in an alphabetical card file in the library. If we can locate the death date in the Georgia Death Index (1919 – 1998), we can look for the obituary in the microfilmed Bulloch County Newspapers. [Please note that not everyone will have an obituary.]
Photos of “Old Houses of Bulloch County” can be found on our Flickr page. These pictures are taken from a slide show created by the Merry Weeders Garden Club and presented to the Statesboro Regional Library in 1978. Material for the three-part series, “Old Houses in Bulloch County,” came from the Statesboro Eagle, The Bulloch Times, The Bulloch Herald, The
Statesboro News, Leodel Coleman’s Statesboro – A Century of Progress, and Bulloch County Historical Files.
The Genealogy Dept. also has a collection of Local History Files. The file drawers are located outside of the Genealogy Office. There are over 100 categories and more than 100 subcategories. There is an index of all categories and some items have been digitized.
Research Assistance
While we are not able to do general research for individuals, we are happy to help you find the resources you need in our library. • Appointments for assistance must be scheduled. Email and phone requests will be helped after patrons in the library have been assisted. • We cannot look up “anything you have on my great grandfather’s family.” But we will be happy to assist in finding a particular record for your ancestor. You must be able to provide enough information to do a thorough search. (Required information: Full name, date of birth/death or estimates, name of close family member, and a location your ancestor lived.) Please keep in mind not all records can be found and many must be attained elsewhere. • If you need assistance in beginning your genealogy research, need help organizing your work, or have missed a genealogy class; you are welcome to make an appointment for assistance.
