Alyson Teal
My name is Aly and I am 32 years old. I am a wife and mother to three amazing, wild children.
I have always loved writing and putting my imagination down on paper. I loved it so much that I
attended Georgia Southern University to study Writing and Linguistics. After college, however, I
didn’t use my writing skills much outside of the occasional thank you card or editing my sister’s
school essays. It was having my children that woke up the creative part of me that seemed to have
gone to sleep.
I spent my nights reading them bedtime stories and my days helping them explore their own
creativity. I encouraged them to make things. I empowered them to bring their ideas to life, but I
soon realized that I wasn’t doing so myself.
So, I changed that. In 2023, I wrote and published my children’s book. I haven’t looked back since.

Dr. Deborah Kittrell-Mikell
Dr. Deborah (Nita) Kittrell-Mikell is a Baltimore, Maryland native who (when she
was growing up), spent many summers with the Kittrell’s in North Carolina.

System for the School of Liberal Studies. Formerly she served as the Director of
Academic Advising at East Georgia State College and Coordinator of Academic
Advising for Georgia Southern University. She has been in the field of Education
for over 30 years but has always had an interest in listening to her elders talk
about how they survived hard times when they were growing up. These stories
inspired her to pursue genealogical research for the Kittrell family. She
completed her doctoral degree in 2017 at Georgia Southern University in
Educational Leadership. She is proficient in academic counseling and is a strong
supporter of pursuing a global education. She has taken classes in Segovia Spain,
attended workshops in Canada, has engaged educators in conversation about

Carolina Genealogical Society (NCGS). She continues to trace her ancestral
history using official and unofficial historical records.
Helen Leonard
Mrs. Leonard is a Bulloch County native where she attended Southeast Bulloch High School in Brooklet. She also graduated from Georgia Southern College with a BS in Education and a major in mathematics. After retiring from a thirty year teaching career (mostly in Mount Airy, NC) she has been involved in various business ventures as well as volunteer positions. Helen married into the Leonard Family in 1968 and witness many unorthodox shenanigans by her brother-in-law, Tyson Leonard. Over the years many tales were shared and it was often said, “Someone should write a book about Tyson.” The only problem was, we didn’t know whether to label it as fiction or nonfiction as many events were unbelievable to normal people. After the passing of her husband, Pete, Helen approached Tyson with the possibility of writing a book. He was ecstatic about the idea and wanted everything told; no matter how damning the telling. However, Tyson’s untimely death eight months later as well as the shutting down of the country because of COVID, put the brakes on the progress of the book. Several years later she picked up the project again and with the help of over thirty interviews with relatives, childhood friends, classmates, business associates and gambling buddies, Helen was finally able to finish the book. Mount Airy, NC continues to be Helen’s home but her visits to her homeplace near Leefield are mandatory at Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as several pop-in visits throughout the year.
