Summer Reading 2019: A Universe of Stories

The library’s Summer Reading Program is a combination of at-home reading activities, library programs, and special performances that are designed to encourage children to keep reading and improving their literacy skills throughout the summer. The main goals of the program are to:

  • Help children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.
  • Keep children motivated to read for pleasure.
  • Help children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library.
  • Make sure that children have access to engaging experiences that further their sense of discovery.

How can my child participate?

Children ages 2-12 can sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the library until June 14th. When you sign up, you will receive a welcome packet with a reading log, which your child will use to track the books they read throughout the summer. For young children who are not yet reading on their own, parents can keep track of the books they read together. As with all library programs and events, the Summer Reading Program is completely free. In addition, every child who signs up for the Summer Reading Program will get to pick out a free book to take home!

Once each week between June 6th and July 25th, your child can bring their reading log to the library to be “checked.” As long as they have read at least one book (at their reading level) during the week, they will get a sticker, a small prize, and the chance to add Legos to our Lego Sculpture. This year’s Lego Sculpture will be a Space Rocket!

Do we have to be at the library on a specific day or time?

No! We understand that summer vacations are packed with a lot of fun activities, so the Summer Reading Program is designed to work with your schedule. You can read at home, and stop by the library any time during the week to have your reading log checked.

When are the library programs and special performances?

When you sign up for summer reading, you will get a copy of the scheduled performers for this summer. Performances will be every Thursday morning at 10:00am, from May 30th through June 27th. We have all kinds of entertainment planned, including storytellers and magicians! In addition, we’ll have tons of fabulous activities planned throughout June and July – you can find those listed on our monthly calendars!
